Ozan Ozavci at workshop ‘In Between Empires: Trans-imperial History in a Global Age’

Dr Ozan Ozavci will attend the workshop In Between Empires: Trans-imperial History in a Global Age that will be held at Freie Universität Berlin, on September 15-16, 2017. By focusing on spaces in-between empires – their connectivity, cooperation and competition – the workshop aims at establishing a trans-imperial approach to the history of empires. In the workshop, Dr Ozavci will present a paper that reconstructs the story of the European Commission on Syria that functioned between late 1860 and 1862. He will bring into attention the commission as a trans-imperial contact zone of competition as much as cooperation, of a hidden war as much as ‘universal peace’. And he will place the workings and deliberations of the commission under scrutiny in the context of the long nineteenth century, questioning whether we can speak of the existence of imperial security cultures.
